Artist Statement
I have always enjoyed taking pictures but had a concern about the cost of developing the film. I never experimented and did not cultivate film photography into a hobby. With the digital age, I was presented the opportunity to explore this interest with no developing cost. I purchased my first digital camera in 2004.
I started taking photographs from my car while traveling back and forth to Chicago helping a friend with openings every month at an art gallery he opened in 2006. I would glance over at distorted lights through the rain soaked windows or the sky and setting sun through trees blurring as they passed on my travels and was overwhelmed with their beauty. I started snapping away, just holding the camera to the side keeping my eyes on the road. I consider most of my favorite photos to be happy accidents. Now I carry my point & shoot camera on most any car trip out of the city.
I noticed many years ago that I was drawn to images that were not under glass and didn’t realize until someone had pointed out that glass often acts as a barrier to art. My photos are either mounted directly onto discarded wood or printed directly or transferred onto aluminum. I will only do minor rotating and cropping. I do no ‘photoshopping’ except an occasional auto correct.
I focus on the ordinary images that we discount or never notice in our lives that pass us by in a hurried flash and try to capture the beauty in those moments.
